Recording

Michael is available as a session musician for both studio and remote recording. See below for details of his experience and examples of his work.

The Courtroom Sketch Artist (2021)
Michael recorded clarinet parts for two songs on Topher Holland's album 'The Courtroom Sketch Artist', in said artist's home studio. For each one he was given a MIDI mockup and basic score in advance, from which he transcribed his own part to allow him to replicate it in the studio. For 'Deadwood Dick' he was required to synchonise exactly with a pre-recorded flute part, whereas for 'Papa Guede' he devised a range of improvisations based around the provided melody.
Project LABGAS (2019)
'Project LABGAS' teaser imageFor The Jelly Roll Jazz Band's third album, 'Project LABGAS', Michael travelled to the state-of-the-art recording studios at Goldsmiths University, London. Over the course of a single three-hour session, he and the other band members recorded the entire album (lasting almost 40 minutes), including multiple takes of many of the tracks. Michael was playing clarinets (Bb/Eb) and spoons, and the finished product is a testament to his ability to perform to a high standard under time pressure in a studio environment.
Red Stripe, Red Stripe, Why Won't You Be My Wife? (2019)
Michael recording the tenor saxophone solo for 'Red Stripe, Red Stripe, Why Won't You Be My Wife' in Huddersfield University recording studios, January 2019Michael played solo tenor saxophone for 'Red Stripe, Red Stripe, Why Won't You Be My Wife?', the first single from the album 'Banquet' by James Ure and the Fridge Doors. The recording session took place in the cutting-edge studios at Huddersfield University, and involved performing a number of improvised solos in differing styles, to give the producer plenty to choose from when mixing the final track.
Michael has a small but perfectly-formed home studio setup, allowing him to produce high-quality recordings remotely. Furthermore, he is well versed in the fundamentals of recording, mixing and mastering, so is able to generate pristine-sounding tracks that slot seamlessly into a project.

He is available to book directly, or through Fiverr.com and Airgigs.com (with whom he has so far completed over 90 projects and consistently maintained 5-star ratings).

Prelude on 'Prospect' (2021)
One of Michael's greatest strengths is his versatility across multiple instruments, which often allows him to record several parts for the same project. An example of this is Konrad Harley's trio 'Prelude on 'Prospect'', for which Michael recorded both flute and bassoon. As usual he was given sheet music and a backing track, and he used his Blue Yeti microphone to capture the exquisite sounds emanating from the instruments.

The Main Street Stride (2020)
Michael was booked via Fiverr.com to record piccolo and clarinet parts for George Streicher's piece 'The Main Street Stride'. He was provided with sheet music, a backing track and a click track, and recorded both instruments using his Blue Yeti microphone. Unusually, for this project he was also required to film himself playing the parts against a greenscreen, with the footage being used for the animations in the final video.

Morella - Original Concept Album (2020)
Michael recorded both flute parts for this album, using his Blue Yeti microphone and playing along to a temporary version of the music (with click track). He recorded two takes of each part, editing them together to produce the best possible performance, before removing extraneous noise (chair creaks, coughs etc.) and exporting each part as a normalised Red Book WAV.
