Description
EDVARD GRIEG: Holberg Suite, Op. 40, Mvmt. III – Gavotte
Arranged for bassoon quartet by Michael A. Grant
The Holberg Suite is one of Grieg’s most popular works, perhaps second only to his famous incidental music for ‘Peer Gynt’. It was composed in order to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of playwright Ludvig Holberg, and attempts to emulate the various forms of dance music that were prevalent during Holberg’s lifetime. Originally written for piano, its five movements were later arranged for string orchestra by the composer, and it is in this version that it is best known. Until now, when a bassoon quartet rendition has arrived to take its rightful place as the definitive interpretation of the work.
