Description
A fully refurbished pre-R13 Buffet clarinet in Bb. It is difficult to date the instrument precisely, as the serial number has almost completely rubbed off – it looks like it might be ‘…735…’ but it really isn’t clear. The fact that the LH spatula keys are mounted on a single post suggests that it was manufactured before 1943.
This will originally have been made as a professional model clarinet, and features a grenadilla wood body with no splits or cracks. The keys are made of ‘nickel silver’ and in excellent condition.
Note that the barrel is not original, but a more recent replacement (grenadilla with silver-plated tenon rings). There is no mouthpiece included. The case is basic, but does a good job of holding the instrument and protecting it during travel.
I have thoroughly refurbished this instrument as follows:
- Fully dismantled.
- Cleaned key tubes, rods and body.
- Polished keys, posts and tenon rings (although nickel silver quickly develops a light tarnish so the metal has since dulled slightly).
- Cleaned old debris (glue?) from RH finger holes.
- Loosened 2 tight rod tubes.
- Repaired damage to LH middle finger tone hole.
- Re-corked tenons.
- Replaced key corks as necessary.
- Fully repadded, with leather pads.
- Oiled bore.
- Oiled keys.
- Fully adjusted and set up.
Here is a short demo of me playing the instrument (using my own mouthpiece and reed):
