CLAUDE DEBUSSY: Cakewalk
Arranged for woodwind quartet by Michael A. Grant
Debussy’s ‘Cakewalk’ is taken from the six-movement suite ‘Children’s Corner’, for solo piano. Its original title is ‘Golliwogg’s Cakewalk’, and it is meant to be reminiscent of the Golliwogg toys that were popular at the time. It is heavily influenced by ragtime, featuring a number of banjo-like effects. Interestingly, it also includes quotations from Wagner’s opera ‘Tristan and Isolde’ in the more lugubrious middle section.
