As a performer, Michael is proficient on flutes, clarinets, saxophones and bassoon. He is confident playing in a wide range of styles, including classical, jazz and pop, and is skilled at both sight-reading and improvisation. This versatility places him in high demand with a variety of ensembles, ranging from symphony orchestras and Dixieland jazz groups to musical theatre pit orchestras and pop covers bands. In addition, he works regularly as a recording session musician, contributing woodwind tracks to an eclectic mix of projects from his home studio.

As a composer, Michael enjoys working in a broad mixture of styles. He has a passion for classical composition (such as his orchestral piece ‘Cinematic Romance’ and his collection of ‘Miniatures’ for solo piano), but also likes writing songs and musical theatre shows (such as ‘It’s Not Really the Apocalypse’ and ‘Mongolian Death Worm: A Puppet Show Musical’). Furthermore he is adept at composing music for film, recently contributing an original score for the short film ‘Bird of Paradise’ as well as several re-scoring projects.

As well as writing original material, Michael often works as an orchestrator and arranger of pre-existing music. His back-catalogue of arrangements includes over 25 orchestrations for the Welsh Musical Theatre Orchestra, along with solo piano transcriptions of Sibelius’ 2nd and 3rd symphonies.
